Local SEO is a great and powerful channel to obtain new and returning visitors to your website. Much like organic SEO, Local SEO has its separate algorithm which uses local signals as a factor in your rankings. By understanding these signals and using proven tactics will help your business propel forward to success via Local SEO.
The term Geo Tagging has been around for quite some time in the SEO community. However, few mention it especially for WordPress.
Geo tagging – is an important aspect in the ranking factor in your local SEO campaign. The purpose of geo tagging is to let Google know where are you located which would make sense from Google’s perspective.
How powerful is it? Rank #1 with no content. “Yeah its that good”
I am sure many of you are having quite some difficulty with local placement because more and more competition is showing up and taking action to boost their rankings.
Now what I’am going to teach you is WordPress specific.
This technique can be adopted in to any CMS or custom programming.
So you may ask yourself what’s the “secret”. I know there is plenty of misinformation out on the net but this I have done and tested myself.
Anyways, Google is looking for numerous things as you know. Here is a brief list of factors:
Places nearby, Accepted payments, KML maps, Google embedded maps, reviews (keyword specific & IP specific), Schema tags, NAP, company description with local information, Local widgets such as maps, weather, news etc.
Inbound Links that are from “local businesses/directories” which consist of NAP and company descriptions. The authority of the website and visitors visiting that particular link. As well as the location of the link on the page.
*Hint: The more outbound links the more juice is given. You want to prevent that using a rel no follow attribute to page or links. Use no follow for your outbound links which you DO NOT want juice flowing to.
Geo tagging signal
By adding meta data to specific geographical location such as a picture, video, SMS messages or website will enable Google to understand where the website is “physically located”. What I mean by this is what Google will tie the virtual website to a physical location. These signals are to enable your customers to easily find you. By informing Google of your location!
So now that you understand the requirements for an effective local campaign we can shift towards the technical aspect.
Geo Tagging Content
First install the plugins to speed up the Geo tagging process (View the guide in the download box above).
For those of you who do not use WordPress you can follow the documentation of schema markup to manually input all those Geo codes:
Geo WP Plugin
Once you have implemented the Geo WP plugin it’s time to activate it:
This plug will have a feature to add your business address – You can quickly find that information by entering your complete address into the Geo tool on each page.
Yes it’s a manual process but it’s relatively quick depending on the amount of pages you wish to Geo locate.
Next we will begin adding a KML map on Google Earth which is free to download: (those who are using Local SEO yoast plugin do not need to worry about doing this process – it is automatically integrated when you enter your business information into the plugin.
Here is how you set up your pin:
google map geo location tagging creating kml file v1
pin selection for kml google earth
save the google pin as
make sure you type in save as and select the kml file
Now add your KML file to your media library in your WordPress website.
WordPress will say this file is an error/security reasons you can’t upload it.
The way around it is to manually upload the file via SFTP – *It must be in SFTP / add it to your library.
Once that is done make a link to download the file by adding this code somewhere on your theme preferably the footer. For example:
Google My Business
Now Google has categories in which you can classify your business as. These categories are going to be used as keywords to help Google better understand what we offer.
Let’s go to Google my Business.
Here we will find out or enter the categories in which describe you as a business. You can have several categories. However, for this example I am going to use my agencies categories:
Internet Marketing Service
Make sure you save the name of those categories because you will later create a landing page for each specific category you have chosen.
An example of the type of landing page you will create is:
Website Designer Coral Gables, FL 33134
Internet Marketing Service Coral Gables, FL 33134
You can use the zip code and state if you wish but at least keep the city – it’s important that you give Google more indicators as to the page location. However, the above example is perfect.
Now, it’s time to create the content for the landing pages.
Formulate the content as shown in the downloadable files I provided above.
You can add more content as you see fit.
As for the “Our KW from Google Category” + Location” Review Sites
You can link to any review site that you are listed in.
Just make sure the anchor text is relevant and similar keyword that you wish to rank for.
For the proudly servicing you can check all of your local areas in your country. (Follow this link and type a search) Wikipedia is really the go for this.
We also need to include media into the pages which can be a video or image or a mix of both.
Video Geo Tagging
For Video you are going to want to create a YouTube channel or if you have one great! You must upload a video you can do these yourself or have someone make them for you.
Once you have uploaded your video you are going to want to add a geo tag into the settings of the video.
You can do this in the advanced setting in YouTube channel or while uploading it.
You can do this by going to your channel. Then, video manager. You should see in the bottom tab “Advanced Settings”
Make sure you fill everything accurately and enter the “Video Location” with the address of the business you wish to rank locally.
Also fill out the description of the video by using your targeted keyword for the page that you wish to rank as well as a link pointing to that page. Make sure you include your Name, Address and phone number into the description. Here is an example:
1234 Miracle Lane
Imagine, FL 11111
And a link from the physical address of your Google maps of your Google My Business listing.
Image Geo Tagging
In order to geo tag an image you must visit Panoramio.com which is owned by Google. In there you need to upload the images relevant to your page you wish to rank locally.
It’s fairly simple – Just upload an image then enter the location of your physical address from your Google My Business listing page.
Next you upload enter keywords relevant to your business and image as well as local tags.
Now, on the left hand side select map this photo – there you will enter the address of your business.
Make sure you add a description with your Name, Address, Phone number and a brief description of your business as well as a link to the page you wish to rank for.
Then, you will head to WordPress where you will upload the same image you inserted into Panromaio and make it linkable to the specific Panormaio page.
Development of Geo Tags on Website
Once all of your pages are complete and you have geo tagged content (Image/Video) it is time to move on to the development part.
Now it’s time to create the side bar with the content I provided in the downloadable link above.
1st Grab some images approx. 25 x 25px – You will need about 11 – 13 different images.
Either JPEG or PNG and add relevant text as the name of the image:
I already included some of those icons in the download link I created you can grab those and change the name as you wish.
Now we are going to put everything together.
1st widget: Add your business information preferably with schema tags – I have included a plugin from raven that enables you to use that – OR you can use Yoast Local SEO widget. Either way you can do this manually as well.
2nd widget: Get a Google embedded map https://email@example.com,-80.2294585,12z – Enter the location of the business – on the left hand side the business should appear. Now click the share button and select embed map. Grab that code and place it in a text widget. Now in the same widget we are going to add a direction link to the address – in the same Google maps page here are the steps to do that:
Right click the marker of your business location
Select “Directions to here”
Delete the above address
Grab the link in the web browser and add this href code (edit as you wish)
<a href=”ADD URL from the Google maps location which you have selected from your broswer”>CLICK HERE FOR DIRECTIONS</a>
3rd Widget: Now you are going to link the specific page category relevant to your business from Google My Business page.
When you add the image to the link make sure it has an ALT tag that is relevant to your business. Again, the downloadable file has all that information.
4th Widget: Payments accepted – here you are going to add all the types of payments you receive make sure you add an image and alt tag.
5th Widget: Places near by – here you will add all the nearby business that is located around your physical address. This helps google better determine where you located. It’s like telling (Google/Person) my house is in the corner right next to a blue house across the street.
Doing all of this in my experience has increased my local rankings by a lot – not only on the local listing but as well as the regular SEO listing results.
